What do the Standard and Poor's (S&P) Ratings mean?
The ratings are S&P's current opinion of an obligor's overall financial capacity (its creditworthiness) to pay its financial obligations. AAA is the highest rating given and represents an "Extremely Strong" capacity to meet financial commitments. Other ratings, in descending order, are: AA+, AA ("Very Strong"), AA-, A+, A ("Strong"), A-, BBB+, BBB ("Adequate") and so on down to CC.
What does the Standard and Poor's (S&P) Outlook mean?
The outlook is S&P's assessment of the potential direction of a long-term credit rating over the immediate term (typically six months to two years). In determining a rating outlook, consideration is given to any changes in the economic and/or fundamental business conditions. "Positive" means that a rating may be raised. "Negative" means that a rating may be lowered. "Stable" means that a rating is not likely to change.
